Choose the best place to begin coloring. Some drawing utensils (such as gel pens or markers) are more likely to smear than others. If you think your utensils could smudge, either color the center of your picture first and work your way outwards, or to start at the top of your page and work your way down. If you are not concerned about smudging, you can begin coloring wherever you’d like.
You can start with a light layer of the color you want to use first. Then you can cover that with darker or lighter color to add life to your drawing, just like the wings on this butterfly. Then you can also create a texture effect. Just cover the drawing with a light stroke first then follow with rough, think strokes to serve as details / texture.
Always Color in a Consistent Direction. It will make a bigger impact on the end result than anything else and any age can use it! The changes in direction, shown on the red kidney below, on the left side, are what make it look sloppy, even though I carefully stayed in the lines. Coloring in a consistent direction, as seen on the other kidney, is easier on the eyes and ends up looking very tidy!
