Coloring in many different directions is a great habit to get into. However, there are still ways to hide your pencil marks while using linear strokes. If you plan accordingly, you can use linear strokes in one area, and then use more linear strokes in a different direction to go back over your pencil marks. This technique is called cross hatching.
When it comes to illustration, Marotta does not have colour schemes in her head: "I dont really have a colour scheme in mind myself when working on an illustration, but that I do think about all the wonderful ways in which other people might colour the image in their own unique style. "I think about the size of shapes that people are going to be colouring in. I think about the details, that its an interesting composition that people can work with – that its got plenty of variety, very intricate areas, and larger more empty areas to colour."
The beautiful thing about coloring is that it can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make it. Either way, you can still come out with a great result. As a beginner, its best to initially focus on laying down even, consistent colors in your coloring books. You are work may appear basic colored without any fancy coloring techniques, but as you practice you will be able to incorporate more complex techniques and color combinations into your work.
