Colored pencils are one of the absolute most common tools used for adult coloring books, and with good reason! They are a no-mess, easily blendable, and abundantly available medium that offer a huge amount of textural flexibility and variation in style when filling in the spaces on the page. Whether you are an expert artist or a coloring newbie, the things you can do once you master colored pencils will blow you away.
To start, hold your pencil as you would if you were writing. There should be a little bit of space between your fingers and the pencil tip. As you color, you may notice your grip starting to tighten. This will end up causing you some pain in the long run, and you will notice your hand cramping up after a while. Remember to keep your grip controlled but relaxed - you may not be able to color as fast, but you will be able to last much longer without any cramps or sore fingers. In most cases, coloring is a marathon, not a sprint.
When it comes to illustration, Marotta does not have colour schemes in her head: "I dont really have a colour scheme in mind myself when working on an illustration, but that I do think about all the wonderful ways in which other people might colour the image in their own unique style. "I think about the size of shapes that people are going to be colouring in. I think about the details, that its an interesting composition that people can work with – that its got plenty of variety, very intricate areas, and larger more empty areas to colour."
