The internet is an incredible resource for any creative hobbyist or artful enthusiast. Blogs (like this one!) abound, and websites like YouTube have enabled a new generation of content creators to share their tips, tricks, and techniques with their audience. Out there on the web, you can find thousands of tutorials and demonstrations, but it is a bit intimidating to just dive in without any idea of what you are looking for.
My reviews are below, but let me say up front that if you are going to just do basic coloring and don’t want to get too crazy, I’d go with pencils. If you are wanting to play with some advanced techniques or detail work (which I’ll address in another post), I’d go with one set of pencils AND one set of markers. Then of course you can throw in pens, crayons, lead pencils, and more.
Cross hatching is a great technique to know because it lets you use those quick, straight strokes that are quick and easy to lay down. This method does have some limitations, though. The end result often appears very flat - if you are trying to make an object appear round or add depth to your coloring, cross-hatching is not the way to do it. It is difficult to use multiple colors when cross hatching, as the individual markings become more visible where different colors meet and overlap.
