Nobody needs to resign themselves to being a one-trick pony. There is a lot more to coloring than just filling in spaces, if you want it to be more than that! In fact, there is a whole plethora of techniques you can learn and put to use right away, giving your colored art that special touch that sets it apart.
When it comes to illustration, Marotta does not have colour schemes in her head: "I dont really have a colour scheme in mind myself when working on an illustration, but that I do think about all the wonderful ways in which other people might colour the image in their own unique style. "I think about the size of shapes that people are going to be colouring in. I think about the details, that its an interesting composition that people can work with – that its got plenty of variety, very intricate areas, and larger more empty areas to colour."
Keeping your hand towards the tip of the pencil should feel more natural, and it will give you more control. Its a great grip for coloring little details, as you can carefully move the point of your pencil into the tiny nooks and crannies between lines. However, dont be afraid to try moving your hand towards the back of the pencil sometimes. When you grip the pencil further back, you can color in a wider arc and cover a larger area of the page. What you lose in control, you gain in mobility. This is a great grip for laying down a lot of color in a short amount of time.
